People ask me this all the time. Here’s the short version: we bridge the gap between goals and execution. Everything else is details — but the details are pretty interesting.
We’re part librarian. We’re the hub that makes sure everyone has the right information at the right time. Who’s doing what? What are we supposed to be building? Who needs to be kept in the loop? That’s all us. We keep the documents, we maintain the records, and we make sure nobody’s working from last month’s version of the plan.
We’re part traffic cop. We give direction when people forget who’s supposed to be doing what — and just as importantly, we’re clear about what we’re not supposed to be doing. Scope creep is a real threat, and it creeps quietly. We see it coming.
We’re part firefighter. We scout out uncertainty before it becomes a crisis. We look at the hazards, get the fire extinguishers in place, and build contingency plans so that when the unexpected happens — and it will — we already have a way to bring things back under control.
We’re part supply sergeant. Resources don’t manage themselves. People, budgets, tools — we make sure everyone has what they need without running the whole operation dry.
And underneath all of that, we’re tracking progress, adjusting on the fly, aligning expectations, defining what “done” actually means before anyone lifts a finger, and making sure every task has a clear owner. When the project wraps, we capture the lessons learned so the next time around, we can skip the expensive mistakes.
It’s not glamorous work. But without it? Nothing ships.
